NO WIND IN COLON
We were on an island called Escudo de Veragua, where no one lives and which is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to in my life.
After a few days there, we had to move to a new place because a storm was coming, so we decided to head to Colón, where the Panama Canal is, and also because there’s a McDonald’s there.
It took us 3 days instead of 1.5 to get there. We had no wind, nothing, so we had to use Calypso’s electric motor and its two batteries.
Once we got close to the Panama Canal gate, we were unable to move the boat by ourselves. We were just drifting, at the mercy of the waves, currents, and tide.
All of this happened while we were surrounded by maybe 60 huge cargo ships. Around 2 am, we decided to pump up the dinghy and bring it down to the water in case we were in danger and really needed a motor to move a bit.
Exhausted, we had to take turns every 30 minutes to keep an eye on the boats around us and hold the light on the sail to see where they were moving and if they could see us.
Who fell asleep during their turn? Me.
And what woke us up? The horn of a huge container ship. Scary, I’m telling you.
Then, a few hours later, we saw one coming in our direction, so we turned on the radio and tried to contact them:
"Hey, this is Calypso, do you see us?"
"Yes, I see you, don’t worry," but the woman said it in a strange way.
Then she screamed:
"I AM A 250-METER CARGO SHIP, DO YOU REALLY THINK I GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU GUYS?
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE HERE!"
This boat passed really close to us, like 50 meters, but I can tell you, it felt like a mountain was passing over us.
so I can say that it took me 3 days to eat one macdonald, and I almost die.
